In these colder winter months, it's hard to resist turning our thoughts to warmer future days. Indeed, this can be a perfect time to plan your summer getaways, when the desire to escape the cold opens up your imagination. For those with boats, any sign of sunny weather is a good excuse to get out on the water. For others, it's not a matter of leisure time, but of dedicated sailing, and sports like fishing and crabbing. No matter your intentions on the open water, it’s always smart to find a solid base of operations that can suit any need, whether it's about serious boating, or fun floating.
The marina where you park your boat is an important place and should be able to handle any sailing need you throw at it. Many have shops, but not all will stock the complete range of parts you may need. A truly prepared marina will have parts such as:
They may also sell maintenance tools to keep your boat in good working order, such as lubricants, sealants, paint, and others. Some may even stock instruction manuals for a wide variety of boats and engine types, in case you find yourself stranded without a clue. It is also important that they provide safety equipment like signal lights and first aid kits. In case of an emergency, your marina should have you covered.
Of course, not everything is serious when you're out on a boat. For many people it's a fun hobby to do with family members. Your marina should have these visitors taken care of as well. A restaurant and bar will give you a fun place to enjoy in the evening , while the shop should have enough fun supplies to keep you occupied in the daytime. Anything you might have forgotten at home should be provided, from inflatable toys to sunscreen and bug repellant.
At the least, a marina is a good place to stay overnight and refuel. At the most, it's a place that can make your vacation perfect, or come through in a time of need. For your next boat outing, choose a place that can do the most for you, your crew, and your family.
